Essential Biology for Quantitative Scientists

Course Description:
The essential elements of biology necessary for a scientist with a background in the quantitative sciences to begin working in the biological sciences. Core biological concepts will be presented with the goal of getting computer scientists, physicists, mathematicians started in understanding biology, and finding productive areas of research inquiry.
Principal Course Assignments:
Readings in the textbook, and supplemental papers, will be assigned to accompany each lecture. There may be homework assignments.
Specific Course Requirements for Grading:
90% = A; 80% = B; 70% = C; 60% = D
Grading Policy:
Student grades will be based on exams and possibly on homework assignments. Additionally, graduate students will be required to write a term paper related to one of the biological topics covered in the course.
All academic work must meet the standards contained in "A Culture of Honesty". All students are responsible to inform themselves about those standards before performing any academic work.
Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to attend lectures. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that he/she is up-to-date with course materials.
Required Course Material Including Texts:
The required materials include the textbook, and materials distributed through the course web site or in class.
Makeup Exam Policy:
Students that have a valid reason for missing an exam will be allowed to take a makeup exam on another day. Makeup exams may be oral.
