Bioinformatics Summer School

June 13-17, 2005

The Institute of Bioinformatics (IOB) is pleased to announce a summer school on “basic bioinformatics tools and applications”. The targeted audience of this summer school is faculty members, postdoctoral research fellows and senior graduate students working in the field of biological sciences with an interest in learning bioinformatics. This five-day program will focus on applications of some of the most basic bioinformatics tools. Each student will have a workstation to work with to do hands-on work during the lectures. Specific topics of the course include

  • BLAST and data mining approaches to finding genes of  interest in unannotated genomes
  • Comparative genome analysis approach to genome annotation
  • Phylogenetic tree construction and application
  • Prediction of protein functions and interactions
  • Protein structure prediction and application

Each of these five topics will be covered in a 3-hour lecture in this five-unit training class. The five instructors are Drs. Alex Feltus, Juntao Guo, Dawei Lin, Jessica Kissinger, and Russell Malmberg.

Class schedule: 1:00 - 4:00 pm, June 13 - 17, 2005

Location: C-128, Life Sciences Building

A registration site has been set up at http://www.bioinformatics.uga.edu/registration2005.php. Because of the limited number of available seats and computers in the lecture room, we will be able to register only 30 students. The registration will be open on April 7, 2005 and will be closed immediately after all the slots are filled.
The slides can be downloaded at http://www.bioinformatics.uga.edu/iob-summer-school/slides.
